Cookie banners and efficient tracking

In this article, we will dispel some myths and misconceptions about cookie banners and the ability to track users.

But first, here's the good news about using ideal.shop :-)

The good news

If you have a webshop with ideal.shop, you can be happy to know that we have a number of optimisations ready for your webshop.

Super effective cookie banner

We currently measure an acceptance rate of 78% on our standard cookie banner (centred and blocking). That's way, way above average.

Automatic ITP optimisation

ITP is an Apple initiative that minimises tracking over time. We have chosen to technically bypass this effect, so if your visitors have accepted cookies, ITP will have very little or no effect.

Track everything

If you need to test something or have other reasons to override the cookie banner, you can do so under "Settings > Shop > Cookies".

The myths

Yes, you MUST use a cookie banner if you use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel or other services that track your visitors

There is no way around it if you want your webshop to be legal. The same is of course true if you use other plugins or integrations such as Mailchimp popup, Messenger chat, etc.

Yes, you lose a lot of data

Around 22% of all visitors reject cookies (measured on the ideal.shop platform - on other platforms the figure is much higher).

"Those of our customers who implement it correctly, according to the law, they lose at BEST 50% of their data"
Halfdan Timm, Obsidian Digital to Marketing Briefs (4:05)

At the moment (January 2021), we still see providers not complying with the new cookie requirements and regulations. This is probably because there have not yet been any consequences for breaking the rules.

However, there are indications that this will soon change:

The DanishData Protection Agency focuses on cookie consent (Dansk Erhverv, 19 January 2021) (Danish Chamber of Commerce, 19 January 2021)
Companies do not follow the cookie rules (Version2, 20 January 2021) (Version2, 20. January 2021)

No, there is no quick fix

Google Consent Mode, Facebook Conversions API and the like are technologies that on the surface sound like a lifesaver. But in reality, they can't be used (legally) to significantly enrich your data unless your visitors say yes to cookies. And then the argument disappears, as visitors are just being tracked the old-fashioned way anyway.
