How fast webshops load on different platforms
A speed test of 13 webshop providers - by Martin Bay
This is a small objective speed test based on different webshop platforms and developers/agencies.
The procedure was as follows:
- find the biggest webshop providers
- visit their websites and find the first (up to) 10 references
- visit the reference so the cache is warm
- do a PageSpeed test on the reference and save the mobile score
The graph below shows the average score.
Please note that this graph only reflects PageSpeed's judgement of a number of webshops' load speeds. It is important to take the following caveats into consideration when looking at the graph.
- on all platforms, it is possible for the customer to "break things" on their own. This can be done by putting plug-n-play integrations into javascript, by installing plugins that are slow or contain bugs, etc. It's impossible to guard against, and this can be reflected in the score below (therefore up to 10 references where possible).
- a fast load time does not mean that an online shop is "good". For example, a static front page with no content will score 100% in PageSpeed but is unlikely to sell much.
The test was made on 3 April 2022 via pagespeed.web.dev. Updated on 14 March 2023 where Shopify Headless was added. If you want to see all the data that forms the basis of the graph, write to us - we will send you the spreadsheet and screenshots.
